Recently, Compliance Podcast Network founder Tom Fox interviewed CEO Dr. Pat Harned on the newest trends report from ECI’s Global Business Ethics Survey® (GBES®); a longitudinal study of ethical trends from the employees’ perspective. In Part 1 of the GBES podcast series, Tom Fox and Dr. Harned discussed the 17th iteration of the GBES and its findings.

Through decades of research including the GBES, ECI has identified key workplace trends and how their rise or fall can indicate the ethical health of global workplaces. The 17th iteration has demonstrated, through its surveying of employees in 42 countries within 5 regions, that there are worldwide ethical trends that are of concern and need to be monitored.

The GBES provides trend insights by measuring:

  • Pressure in the workplace to compromise ethical standards;
  • Observations of misconduct by employees as they go about their day-to-day work;
  • The reporting of misconduct when observed;
  • Any retaliation perceived by employees after they report misconduct and
  • Strength of workplace culture from an E&C perspective.

Dr. Harned discussed with Tom Fox an overview of the study itself, the vast number of employees surveyed, the concerning metrics found in the 2023 GBES and how the GBES Report can be properly utilized by E&C professionals to stay informed and make a change to become a High-quality E&C Program (HQP) before the situation deteriorates further.
