Pat Harned, Ph.D. in conversation with Rob Fisher

Beginning in 2022, ECI brought together a group of leaders, each offering a unique perspective on the development of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues, and the role of business in addressing such issues. The members of this Blue-Ribbon Commission on Corporate Impact and ESG come from a variety of backgrounds, including business, investment firms, ratings agencies, and academia.

Over the past year, the Commission has convened to provide a new perspective to the longstanding global debate about the responsibility of business for environmental and social issues and to help companies identify and integrate ESG priorities into their strategies and operations.

The final report, now available to download, offers principles and case examples of leading practices, helping corporations to identify their environmental and social responsibilities through a lens of corporate purpose, core ethical values, and intended stakeholder impact.

Charge

The Blue-Ribbon Commission and this report serve to pivot the discussion about corporate responsibility to a focus on the role of purpose and core values when doing business in today’s world (and in the future). Despite the current debate around environmental, social and governance responsibilities, business has a unique and essential role in addressing the challenges of our world and an ethical obligation to positively impact their stakeholders.

Goals

The Commission will:

  • Define “business integrity” and offer evidence that it drives opportunity and long-term success, while addressing risk;
  • Develop principles to help companies integrate environmental, social and governance priorities into their strategy and operations, then and measure, communicate and report on progress;
  • Provide leading practices to highlight how business integrity principles can generate business opportunities and drive transparency;
  • Offer guidance for business leaders who encounter competing priorities and difficult or novel questions as they holistically implement business integrity in their strategy and operations; and
  • Identify targeted, practical recommendations for key positions within organizations that drive success.
