Ethics & Compliance Initiative (ECI) Presents the  Carol R. Marshall Award to Steve A. Linick of Mercy Corps.

The annual award recognizing innovative leaders in the Ethics & Compliance industry  was presented during IMPACT 2024, ECI’s global ethics conference.

WASHINGTON, DC—December 10, 2024 Ethics & Compliance Initiative (ECI), the global non-profit organization that empowers organizations to build and sustain cultures of integrity, has presented its prestigious Carol R. Marshall Award for Innovation in Corporate Ethics to Steve A. Linick, Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer at Mercy Corps on December 2nd before their board of directors. Steve was also recognized in October at ECI’s IMPACT 2024 conference.

“ECI is proud to announce Steve Linick as the recipient of this year’s Carol R. Marshall Award” said Patricia J. Harned, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of ECI.  Each year, the prestigious Carol R. Marshall Award is presented to an ethics & compliance practitioner whose achievements exemplify the leadership and innovative practices modeled by the late ECI Fellows Chair Carol R. Marshall.”

Tjada D’Oyen McKenna, Chief Executive Officer of Mercy Corps shared that “Over the past four years, Steve has created – from the ground up – a strong global ethics & compliance team, with responsive, trustworthy, and diverse leadership.  Steve has been integral to developing and implementing clear standards to prevent harm and abuse from occurring within Mercy Corps and in our programs.”

Since joining Mercy Corps in October 2020, Steve has led a stand-alone ethics & compliance Department that supports and monitors ethical, legal and contractual compliance across Mercy Corps’ global operations. He also oversees the Intake and Investigations department, responsible for all reports of ethics violations including safeguarding allegations, fraud, corruption, other Code of Conduct reports, and Global Human Resources complaints.

Vijaya Gadde, Global Board Chair of Mercy Corps added “Steve and his team built a movement across Mercy Corps, creating a culture of integrity, where team members, partners, and participants can safely speak out about misconduct. One of Steve’s superpowers is that he finds a way to make hard topics engaging and relevant. By implementing an annual agency-wide Ethics Week, Steve’s team has found a way to engage team members across the globe to be ethics champions.”

Linick is recognized for leading the Mercy Corps’ Board of Directors through safeguarding training and his work with the Mercy Corps’ Ethics and Safeguarding Board Committee. His team’s initiatives and inclusiveness have led to innovative ways of engaging its 6,000 global team members including an internal “Jeopardy” competition, communications highlighting ethical risks, and implementing new global reporting mechanism policies.

Each year, ECI issues a call for nominations from the public. Each nominee should serve (or has served) as Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer, or the equivalent, in a for or non-profit business or government organization and is currently employed within that organization. They should also demonstrate innovation in three different categories. The recipient is then selected by an independent committee of leading Ethics & Compliance practitioners. Harned also noted that “ECI is grateful to KPMG LLP for funding the 2024 Carol R. Marshall Award, representative of its commitment to the Ethics and Compliance industry.”
