Recently, Compliance Podcast Network founder Tom Fox interviewed CEO Dr. Pat Harned on the newest trends report from ECI’s Global Business Ethics Survey® (GBES®); a longitudinal study of ethical trends from the employees’ perspective. In Part 2 of the GBES podcast series, Tom Fox and Dr. Harned discussed the 2023 findings about the state of misconduct in the workplace.

Workplace misconduct is a risk for any organization. The 2023 GBES results showed that nearly two-thirds (65%) of employees have observed misconduct within the past year. This is a highly concerning number, demonstrating that workplaces around the world have misconduct risk.

Dr. Harned discussed strategies with Tom Fox as to how organizations can properly address misconduct, starting from the top. Managers can teach employees how to prevent misconduct, and maintain trust, both important in reducing risk. Recognizing that misconduct can still occur means that managers should also help educate employees on how to properly spot misconduct and report it.

One promising metric from GBES is that globally, reporting of observed misconduct is at a record high. As observed misconduct goes up, which is concerning, misconduct reporting rising in tandem softens the blow.

Workplace misconduct can only be addressed when reported, so providing training as to how to spot misconduct and clear and having protection for reporting is key. Without it, misconduct can go unreported, creating potential liability for an organization that can result in fines, lawsuits and erosion of public reputation.

Find out more about a key cause of misconduct and the effects of retaliation in the workplace on the next episode of the GBES Podcast Series.
